Our first assignment was to name an interesting phenomenon in digital communication and then add the definition of it onto Urban Dictionary. We came up with a couple of ideas but some of them already exist in Urban Dictionary.
We chose live tweeting as our phenomenon. Live tweeting means that when people are watching TV, they tweet what is currently happening on the program they are watching. We decided to choose live tweeting because it is very common nowadays. Even the producers of the TV shows have noticed the live tweeting phenomenon and the tweets about their TV programs can be seen on the TV screen. You can see our definition on Urban Dictionary here.
People are actually using the term live tweeting, at least the Finnish version “live tweetata”. We also wondered if we should use some other term for our phenomenon, but because the term was not on Urban Dictionary yet and it is already in use, it was reasonable to choose the term live tweeting.
We decided to use Moodle as a tool for this assignment. We discussed our ideas in our Moodle group conversation. We had to think about how live tweeting relates to digital communication and in what kinds of situations it takes place. We also had to think if some already existing concepts are similar to live tweeting or if there are some that differ from it. It was quite hard to fit all these things in 50 words.
The first assignment sounded difficult at first, but luckily there were good instructions in Moodle. Moodle is quite handy a tool for group work, the only minus side is that you can’t get notifications from Moodle messages straight to your phone. That is the reason why working in Moodle is not so fast but in this case it didn’t matter because we started working early enough. At the end it was actually a lot of fun doing this assignment!
